The story

Swiggy is two businesses moving in opposite directions. Food delivery had its best quarter yet, earning ₹341 crore in Jul–Sep 2026, while Instamart lost ₹895 crore as it cut prices and opened stores to grow faster. The company says Instamart's losses have now peaked, and that it needs a little over twice today's orders to stop losing money. It has ₹13,662 crore of cash and no bank loans to get there, and says it will fix Instamart in the cities it already serves before spending that cash on new ones. Its share price, down by more than half in a year, is a bet on whether it can.

-24.1%ROCE

Is Swiggy's ROCE good?

No. Swiggy's is −24.1%: for every ₹100 invested in the business, it lost about ₹24.

The money is not tied up in plant: the business needs little equipment. Most of the capital is ₹13,662 crore of cash and investments, raised by selling shares and kept to pay for the losses until Instamart grows.

The stores are filling up, which is what a positive ROCE would need. Swiggy starts planning a new store in an area once the old one passes about 2,000 orders a day, and its stores now average close to 1,200 orders a day: "This is the best we have ever seen," Rahul Bothra said on the call. It plans no new cities for now, so stores are added only where existing ones run full.

What are the risks for Swiggy?

↗ Could go right
  • Food delivery grew over 20% in September 2026
  • The company says Instamart's losses peaked in Jul–Sep 2026
  • Owning its goods adds about 0.8% of order value to Instamart's margin
  • ₹13,662 crore of cash and no bank loans

↘ Could go wrong
  • Instamart needs more than twice today's orders to stop losing money
  • Large online shopping companies pushing into quick delivery
  • About ₹700 crore of cash going out each quarter
  • ₹327 crore GST notice on past delivery charges

Will the internet platform industry keep growing?

Yes. Instamart's orders grew 29% in a year, to 13 crore in Jul–Sep 2026, and the company expects food delivery to grow 18–20% this year. In both, Swiggy is smaller than Eternal. Unlike Eternal, it plans no new cities for now: "We don't have a near-term expectation to increase the geographical coverage," Rahul Bothra said, so its growth has to come from the 130-plus cities it already serves.
